Twelve luxury bedrooms, more than 1km of water frontage and two of your own private islands just offshore. That’s what you get for $120 million USD: the cost of the most expensive family home ever sold in the United States.
Copper Beech Farm, located in the town of Greenwich in Connecticut, was originally listed for a record-setting $190 million USD. The asking price had been reduced several times since last May and the 50-acre property eventually sold for $120 million – making it the most expensive single-family home ever sold in the US.
The description from agents David Ogilvy & Associates reads like something out of a fairytale: a 75-foot pool with a spa, a private beach, a grass tennis court, two greenhouses, sweeping water views and constant privacy thanks to the property’s walled gardens. But then with such a hefty price tag, a few creature comforts are to be expected.
Built in the French Renaissance revival style in the 1890s, the property was home to the notable Lauder Greenway family for 75 years. The most recent owners, businessman John Rudey and his wife, purchased the property 31 years ago in an private sale.
From the 1800-foot driveway, visitors enter the grand entrance room through two stone towers at the front door. The main rooms have 12-foot high ceilings, with a carved fireplace in the living room. The total living space measures an enormous 15,000 square feet. There are some incredible finer details, including a traditional tracery ceiling in the dining room and a wood-paneled library.
The master bedroom offers luxury to the extreme: there’s a fireplace, a sleeping porch, a dressing room and a marble bathroom. There are 11 other bedrooms spread over the mansion’s three storeys. The third floor has a staff wing, while the original staff kitchen with a dumb waiter can still be found in the basement. Also on the grounds is a stone carriage house complete with a clock tower, providing loads of parking space for cars and farm equipment.
