Looking for inspiration to redecorate your home? Curvy couches, quartz kitchens and shades of purple in the bedroom – these are just three trends that are hot in interior design right now. Take a tour through each room of the house to discover what’s on trend for 2014.
Bedroom
Purple is officially in. The color experts at American company Pantone have named Radiant Orchid the colour of the year for 2014. The color blends fuchsia, purple and pink undertones to make a light, bright purple. For interiors, try incorporating the shade in paint, accent pieces and accessories. Pantone suggests using it to complement olive and deeper greens, or to liven up neutral tones like beige and grey.
Living room
Straight-edged sofas are out, modern curved couches are in. Retro curvy designs in particular are tipped to be in living rooms everywhere this year. Also ideal for living spaces, corduroy upholstery has been named one of the trends to watch in 2014. “It’s the casual alternative to velvet and the preppy version of chenille,” designer Betsy Burnham told the Wall Street Journal.
Kitchen
Black counters, open shelves and cabinets, and darker tones are all tipped to dominate in the kitchen this year. Meanwhile, quartz is set to overtake granite as the most popular choice for countertops. This engineered stone is extremely durable, very low maintenance and can be manufactured in any colour.
Garden
Black and white combos, out-of-the-box plants and popping colors are making waves in the backyard, according to Garden Media. The company’s 2014 garden trends report suggests combining black and white furniture, decorations and even plants to add a touch of class and a modern edge to your garden. Other trends include edible gardens, composting, indoor vegetation and incorporating wild plants.
